Scrappy was our 14-year-old Shepherd mix and the mascot for our company. Over the last two to three years of his life, we bonded more than ever and even have a video of him helping with our business. He will always be missed and a part of our family and our business. Scrappy was laid to rest on May 14, 2015, but his friendliness and memory serve to remind us of how we should treat each and every customer that contacts us.
The problem we face in America is an estimated 14.3 million tons of textiles end up in our landfills. Textiles are anything from clothes, to shoes, curtains, pillows, blankets, rags, etc. The natural fibers can take hundreds of years to decompose and may release methane and C0 2 gas into the atmosphere. The chemicals, dyes and other components can seep into the soil contaminating the surface and groundwater. The more durable textiles are manufactured from synthetics and are designed not to decompose.
The solution to this growing problem is to donate unwanted textiles to charities and thrift stores, including stained, damaged, and missing items such as 1 shoe or clothes with missing buttons. What the stores and charities cannot use or clothes that do not sell will be sent to textiles for recycling and repurposing. The items are sorted through, the good items are distributed to other charities, some which are located in other countries, and the remainder of the materials will be repurposed as wipes, rags and insulation. After recycling as much as possible, it leaves about 5% to be incinerated, thus reducing the growing problem to our never-ending landfills.
